FilmDreams!
Welcome to FilmDreams. This website is the face of an independent film project based in New York City. The purpose of the project is not to challenge Steven Spielburg. Rather, it is to allow a number of people of diverse backgrounds to participate in the entire process of creating a film and hopefully having it shown at a film festival or two.
Computer jockeys, photographers, graphic artists, teachers, dentists... and even the occasional actor are involved. Financing, script hunting, script editing, project planning, service acquisition, web site development, e-commerce, and a thousand other tasks need to be accomplished and managed prior to, during, and after actual shooting.
Our rough schedule is to get the site up, registered, and functional by early July of 1999. From July through December of 1999, scripts will be solicited from anyone who might want to contribute one for the possibility of production. Students and closet writers are the likeliest source of scripts for a project such as this... fortunately there are a lot of them in NYC. During the same period, work on the soundtrack, learning about and selecting support services (developing, camera work, post production, etc.) will undergo initial assembly.
From Jan through June of 2000, the field will be narrowed to a few good scripts. At this point the individuals involved with the organization of the film project as well as the internet community at large will have an opportunity to add, change, or delete lines or entire sections of the scripts. As a collective we hope to be able to develop a better script than any of us might be able to independently.
Potential shooting sites, music to be used for the soundtrack, scripts, and many other elements will be available for scrutiny, suggestion, and modification by those who are members of the project. Initially such memberships will be free, but an opportunity will eventually exist for people to make contributions to the cause.
The optimistic plan calls for shooting to begin in late summer or early fall of 2000, but this will depend on how well we can accomplish all the preliminary goals.
Finally, this doesn't happen for the cost of a wish and a little pixie dust. Reel $$$ are involved. Depending on whether a 13.5 minute festival demo is ultimately selected for production or a full 90 minute film, the cost could range from a skimpy $35K U.S. all the way to $120K U.S. Actually, to produce a film for under a couple of million dollars is ludicrous to many in the industry, but smart choices and good management can make a good result possible for an amount that is more attainable to the common man.
And this is all being done by the common man. Ok, several common men. And some common women. In fact, why don't we just call the film "Commoners" and be done with it.
At any rate, here's hoping you will want to participate in our project any way you are able. Thanks for stopping.
